Day 26: Hello Somebody

This is just going to be the pre-curser, the real post will come next week when I clear up some communication issues.

Hello Somebody!

This wonderful organization was suggested to me by my friend Sarah. She is a huge fan of theirs and owns several of their apparel. Thanks Sarah!

What is Hello Somebody?
           At it's heart Hello Somebody is the result of a call to action. This specific call was to feed a million meals in one calendar year. The founder, Ben Pirtle, became inspired and plagued by a missions trip to Honduras, where the children didn't want to play with the toys he brought but instead ate the food offered behind him. Now Hello Somebody sponsors 100 street boys in Rwanda to go to school and eat twice a day.  They also are raising support for people who lost so much in the wake of the tornados that touched down in Joplin and Tuscaloosa.

Why Hello Somebody?
           Because Sarah is truly an inspiration to me and one of my dear, dear friends. I am so glad she is in my life and she greatly supports this ministry. I am very glad she suggested Hello Somebody because I have heard about the Hello Rwanda campaign on a traveling blog but not much of the charity helping it. When I read more on their website I couldn't believe what a coincidence it was! I found the story very inspiring and the products unbelievably cool. This is one nonprofit that I can get behind!

Day 25: Kiva

I am taking the lazy route on this one. But I don't have anything current to add on to the Y and I was very inspired by this video of how we can all be awesome bankers.

Since John Green explains everything (way better than I can) I am going to let him do the talking. Enjoy learning about both our current system of banking and a genius way to help eliminate poverty. Oh, and this is all under 3 minutes. :)

Day 24: World Help

I would say I'm pretty familiar with World Help. But I guess it would be more accurate to say I am more familiar with Vernon Brewer, the founder and president of WorldHelp.

We both attended the same University, though the name has changed since he was a student. We both became passionate about world missions after a church trip to Mexico as teenagers. I have listened to Vernon Brewer speak several times, including at my baccalaureate service. His stories always inspire and astound. I have read every book he wrote that I could snatch up, always taking the time to sit down and read them even with my school schedule.

World Help is the real deal, and with Vernon Brewer at its head, I stand behind it. World Help is providing so much, physically and spiritually! Their project, CauseLife, is transforming entire communities in Africa by providing wells with clean water. The choir, Children of the World, is one of my favorites. I always want to take one (or two or three...) of the kids home with me. LOVE THEM!

Day 23: EatArt

Switching up the organization again, but I couldn't find my girl scout pictures. And I know I have badges around somewhere...

But today I found Eat-Art.org. I accidentally discovered it through twitter, though I don't remember who tweeted the link. I clicked on the website and was blown away by the art and the giving.

Now what is Eat Art?
          Eat-Art is an organization that is trying to artfully end hunger. What a slogan! Their branding is genius. Seriously, when you purchase any art or apparel, meals are sent to hungry children around the world. You get the art. The kids get to eat. *LOVE their business model!*

 Why Eat Art?
         Go to the website and you will immediately see why. Go on, click the link. I dare you. You can buy prints for $20, that goes on to feed 100 kids. My bank account is low, but even I can afford that! Now let's see you give an excuse.

Day 22: Wretches and Jabberers

I know, again I am switching out my nonprofit! WorldHelp will come up again, trust me.

But today I saw an amazing trailer that completely blew me away. Everyone wants to be accepted, wants to be heard. I was teased a lot as a kid, but at least I could communicate and rise above it. So many autistic children simply cannot, until they learn they have a voice.

Two of my close relatives are autistic. One had a mild case, and I have never had a problem (though I've heard stories...). The other, however, is severely autistic and I have a very difficult time interacting with him. My difficulty does not make him any less of a person, just a different one. :)

Watch the trailer and tell me in the comments what you think. Also, if you have someone you care for who is autistic let me know! It is amazing what these people can do... we think that they have a disability but then the sheer stroke of genius you never expect hits you out of nowhere.

Day 19: Run for Their Lives

It feels like a Saturday. Maybe that's why I almost completely forgot about this post.

What is RUN FOR THEIR LIVES?
             (From the About page)

Run For Their Lives is a 10K race, 5k run/walk and Youth Run in Lynchburg, VA that aims to place the spotlight on sexual slavery worldwide but specifically in Southeast Asia.

Poverty in Thailand has forced hundreds of thousands of women into sexual slavery and prostitution. It is estimated that two children are sold into slavery every minute.

Run for them. Run for freedom. Run for their lives.

Why Run For Their Lives? 

          I think it's a genius way to raise money for a cause. Plus, I am running it in October. I really need to get back on track with training.

Since I've been running and gunning all day, I did not do any art for this npo. But I am in Kansas City for a work conference, and here is a little peek.

P.s., I got to meet Nancy Stafford tonight!!! Look her up if you do not know who she is, but she's been a Hollywood actress for years and has a new movie coming out soon (Christmas with a Capital C). She's very talented and I hope I get to talk with her more about the film industry!

Day 18: Freedom 4/24

I really have no idea why I chose Freedom 4/24 as my nonprofit today. It is one of my top favorite organizations but today is one of the worst days for me to do a decent blogging job. I have a major sinus headache and I have to get up early to fly out to Kansas City tomorrow. I can barely see straight right now.

But... Without further ado;

What is Freedom 4/24?
           Freedom 4/24 is an organization that raises awareness about sexual slavery in Asia, mainly Thailand and seeks to fight for freedom through buying one night for a prostitute to show her a way out. Much more awesome stuff on the website.

What Freedom 4/24?
          I love what Freedom 4/24 is about. They are empowering women and making a difference overseas. Last I heard the organization has "bought" a night of freedom for 300 women and over 200 of them have reached out and taken steps to build a better life. They are effective!
Plus, I am running a 5k for their organization in October. I'm nervous since I've never run a race like this before, but I know I need to do it.

Day 17: Operation Smile

Ok, so I'm changing up what I posted on Sunday. Sue me.

Operation Smile: A smile changes everything.

What is Operation Smile?
             Operation Smile is a mobilized force of medical professionals and caring hearts who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate. They are are so much more, but you should go check out their website for more.

Why Operation Smile?
            I saw this video and had to. I wanted to hug this beautiful little girl the entire time. Watch and enjoy.

Day 16: CARE

I ended up walking into my town's branch of CASA earlier today, and talked to one of the women there. She told me that their promotions director is out because of a family emergency, but would contact me (hopefully...) once she was able. So I agreed to hold off on doing a blog post, mainly because I do want to start putting more effort into each nonprofit. Especially since this is a local nonprofit, it would be really nice to sit down and have a good conversation about the works of CASA in my area.

Anyway, I had to choose another nonprofit for today, and CARE came to mind. I love CARE! I follow them on youtube and their videos are always thought provoking and challenging.

CARE: Defending Dignity. Fighting Poverty.

What is CARE?
            CARE is a humanitarian organization fighting poverty by placing an emphasis on the rights and wellbeing of women and girls. They provide medical care, schooling, even micro-loans to jumpstart a community's economy.

Why CARE?
            Have you seen their videos?! SO good.

I also chose CARE because they honestly do make a difference in poverty-stricken areas. On their website they do a numbers breakdown, which I really appreciate. And I can't help but say this, I also chose CARE because I am a woman, and knowing that I could be in the same position as many of these women had I not been born American really drives me to make a difference in their lives. I hope the world wakes up and stops putting down the beautiful people that women are.

Day 14: P & J Wedding!

Well Saturdays I take off from the nonprofit project, but I still want to keep up with the days, so if I do anything exciting I'm going to blog about it!

Today, I shot the photography for the wedding of an amazing woman of God woman who has been in my life since childhood. I cannot even describe how close our families have been through the years, but I am super happy for her. She has been through so much, and to see her this happy with her guy, was such an incredible privilege. Here's to Joe and Penny on their new marriage!

One of the simplest ceremonies I've ever been to. But so them, and very very sweet. 

Love this family and I wish them the best in the future. I'm going to miss them, (they are all moving from five minutes away to over an hour to the Western Shore of MD) but it'll be really good for their family. 

Day 13: Fail Friday

Well I waited till the last minute, but I didn't get any suggestions for a nonprofit. Which is ok, since I'm just beginning. And I know that not a lot of people read my blog so I probably should have asked on Facebook. Oh well.

Day 12: StoryCorps Revisited

I hope people listened to some of the stories on StoryCorps. They are really powerful. Again, I highly recommend you record a conversation with a loved one.


I'm not going to say this is perfect, because it isn't, but I really wanted to highlight my grandmother. She has some amazing stories. Here are a few clips, I hope you enjoy.

Make sure you practice first before recording anything! That would have helped a lot. Also, find a really quiet place to have the conversation. I was limited because we have an aquarium downstairs and my mom mom can't go anywhere else. You hear it in the background. And actually, audio turned out better than I thought! :)

Day 11: StoryCorps!

Slogan: Every voice matters
What is StoryCorps?
          Story Corps is an organization that helps to record and preserve people's stories. A few people at a time, usually family members, make an appointment at StoryCorps and then they go in and talk in front of a microphone. They have a few brick and mortar places to go and have a "conversation" or interview of the person whose story you want to keep. Stories can also be about someone who has past, to provide a legacy for their memory.

Why StoryCorps?
            StoryCorps has quickly become one of my favorite nonprofits ever. They are creative, personal, and real. Some of the stories on their site can easily make you cry. I chose to highlight them this week because they have been focused on capturing stories of experiences from 9/11.

They do not animate all of the stories that are told, but the few they do grab you and keep you.

Using this site as inspiration, I sat my grandmother down and interviewed her tonight. It got heavy. I saw her struggle. The audio is a mess and my vid camera shut off halfway through, but I'm glad I did it. It took about half an hour for us to get anywhere! But then just a simple question sparked a flow, and I learned a lot about my mom mom. Read through the site, follow their instructions, and grow.

Day 10: Tuesday's Children

What is Tuesday's Children?
          I am taking this description from their tagline; Tuesday's Children provides support for the families of 9/11 and others impacted by global terrorism. 

Tuesday's Children provides several healing programs that follow kids all the way through college. This is a really cool system, especially since they have more recently opened it up to victims of all terrorists attacks, so a boy who lost his father in 9/11 could go on a trip with a boy who lost family in the D.C. sniper attacks and become friends/confidants through the experience. It's a great nonprofit that has really made a difference in the lives of children affected. If you go to their website they have some great videos and articles with stories.

Why Tuesday's Children?
          I really wanted to showcase a ngo that helps the children cope with such a great loss, and while searching I found Tuesday's Children and liked their stories so much I couldn't move to another page. And yes, I blogged about them today because it is Tuesday. I like being that shallow.

But I did read this blog written by one of my favorite bloggers, Penelope Trunk, who describes her narrow survival from one of the Twin Towers.

Day 9: Flight 93 National Memorial

A common field one day... A field of honor forever.

What is Flight 93 National Memorial?
             The memorial is to honor and remember the heroes on the plane on flight 93 (A Boeing 747 plane) whose lives were lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. All it took was 35 minutes, from when the hijackers overtook the plane to when the passengers stole it back, for history to forever be changed. Each person on that plane refused to let terrorism rule their fate. I have no idea of what the conversation must have been leading up to their struggle, but I imagine it to be so powerful. The Flight 93 National Memorial was revealed this past weekend, on September 10th, 2011.

Why Flight 93 National Memorial?
          These people were not fighters. Yet they believed in something bigger than themselves. Freedom. And they sacrificed their lives for it. No matter what you believe, every person on that plane who sacrificed to save our nations capital is a hero, and they deserve the best. And unfortunately, while the Memorial was unveiled, it is not yet completed. I expect corporations to make the most donations, but if you are feeling patriotic this is a great nonprofit to donate to.

Day 7: Yay 1 week!

Today, I slept in and then played cards and chess with my good friend Chris. We finished the day with a disturbing British movie, which meant that the humor was awesome and the violence very bloody. The cinematography was one of the best I have ever seen. 9/10 I was gasping at how perfect the shot was.

Now, I am calling it a night and will post my 5 nonprofits tomorrow!

Day 6: Y.M.C.A.

What is Y.M.C.A (Aka "The Y")?
             

 I think these guys described it best. 

Ok now, really. The Y.M.C.A. has been around for over 100 years. Originally the idea came from a young man named George Williams in London, who felt a  Young Men's Christians Association was needed for the farm boys who came to the city to look for a job. But when the need arose here a decade later a missionary decided to recreate it. Society desperately needed something like this and the Y quickly caught on. Soon after that an African-American's Y was created, and Y centers were used as meeting areas for civil right activists. In the 60s all Y.M.C.A.'s became open for everyone, regardless of race or religion.

Today the Y strives to serve the community be creating diverse programs for children, promoting healthy life styles for adults, and empowering the local body of people. While the Y might not be as Christ-focused as it used to be, the authentic love for people is as vibrant as ever.

Why the Y?

              Two reasons.

Number one. My friend Gracie works there and when first told her about this project she said I should do it. I hadn't even thought of the Y as a nonprofit, so I'm already learning a lot!

Number two. I like the Y. I used to be involved with their kids programs, including indoor soccer (where I learned soccer will never be my sport, I'm horrible at it), and over winter breaks I would get a cheap student membership and go workout. Now it's not so cheap... so I haven't been back but I really do need to go exercising. My muscle loss is horrifying. 

*Sad Note: I had the PERFECT idea for a creative piece of art for the Y, but then I ended up staying late at work and missed my opportunity. Oh well. I also worked on a huge project that I can't reveal just yet. Next week I'll have more time.

Day 5: SAT-7 Revisited

Did you know that the vast majority of Muslims have never met a Christian? To many muslims, Christians are evil. I have been learning about the caricature pictures of Christians that Muslims are being taught. For example, I recently read a story where a young man talked about his mother telling him that, "the Christians will come and take you away if you do not behave." Instead of monsters under the bed, kids would fear Christians!

Jesus loves all

Living in the West we can't understand what life is like in the Middle East and North Africa. There are cultural differences that we can't even comprehend. I spent two months in Egypt, which is the most open country in these regions and still did not understand much. People stood super close, they stared, most of the humor escaped me. If I was to just go up to any person in the street and start talking about Jesus they would think I was crazy and go on their way, if not kick me out of the country. But when a person who is from that culture starts to talk about Jesus, it makes begins to make sense.

This is what sets SAT-7 apart. Each program uploaded to the satellite feed explains Jesus' words through ways that represent both the culture and God's Truth. Did you know that in Tunisia lambs are considered dirty? So when we Westerners talk about Jesus being the Lamb, we are inadvertently confusing and even offending the very people we are trying to communicate with! Thankfully more Christians who understand this cultural separation are stepping forward.

SAT-7 has four different channels, SAT-7TURK, SAT-7PARS, SAT-7ARABIC and SAT-7KIDS. Different channels for different languages and cultures. Stories are coming in daily about how far of a reach this is having on the people watching SAT-7 programs. More couples are trying to work on their relationship instead of giving up, more men are turning from drug and alcohol abuse, and children's livelihoods are improving. In the countries where it is possible, more Christians are reaching out to their Muslim neighbors and becoming emboldened as they talk about their faith.

Here is a video about a group of Christians singing about Jesus in a mall. This is Lebanon's take on a flash mob. When I first watched this, I commented about the audio and how it seemed so staged. An international staff member who I was discussing this with said that for Lebanon Christians, this was huge. They were taking the risk of being out there and it had to be perfect. We don't see it as authentic, because it was obviously pre-recorded and very rehearsed. But to them, it was a huge hit! Put in that context, I watched the video again with a completely different view. 


*With 9/11 right around the corner, consider reaching out to someone you know who has a different faith than you. Remember that as different as that person may be, he/she was created by God and put here for a purpose. By loving like Jesus we can slowly turn the tide of hate and lift the veil of ignorance.

Day 4: World Vision

What is World Vision? 
                World Vision's tagline says; "Building a better world for children," but I think that doesn't even cover half of it. This organization teaches, provides, encourages, and connects people all over the world. They have processes set in place for natural disasters and can be one of the first people on scene to help where needed. They are a company that sets up relationships for life, not just come in once and be done.
             
Why World Vision?
               I am highly inspired by World Vision. I do not remember when I first learned about World Vision, but I remember immediately wanting to work for them as a spokesperson. And I absolutely adore their child sponsorship program. It's hard to believe how they started sponsoring children in the 1950s and how big it has become. I think it's a genius model. By sponsoring for the care of a child, you raise the education level in a community, you lower the crime rate because less and less people feel the need to steal to provide for their family, and you provide security for a family financially which allow them to provide a loving environment for a child. Through this, you feel connected to people on the other side of the globe. It's win-win!
            Their disaster relief programs are also unbelievably strong. World Vision has been a consistent help in times of need. The 2004 Tsunami, Haiti, and now the famine in the Horn of Africa, World Vision has been the voice of the people there. I can give money to World Vision and feel completely confident that each dollar is being used in a way that values the humanity of each person being helped. As a Christian, this value is so important to me, but even more to the people in need. People shine when shown that they matter.

Instead of posting a picture of anything today, I want to encourage you to head on over to the World Vision site and consider sponsoring a child or giving to the Horn of Africa cause.

P.s., I am now sponsoring a beautiful little girl named Anju. She is from India, a country very close to my heart. It might be very scary to take the plunge and begin sponsoring, but it is so worth it. I put it off for years because I was never financially stable, and I regret those wasted years when I could have been doing so much good in the world. One of my dearest friend told me over the weekend when we talked about World Vision that she has always had just enough to cover her sponsorship. I would say that she was even more financially unstable than I was, and yet every month $35 dollars would leave her bank account and there would still be at least one dollar left. God has always took care of her needs and her story is very powerful through this. So don't wait, sponsor!

                 

Day 3: Impact Georgia

What is Impact Georgia? 
             Impact Georgia is an organization that seeks to shine the light of Christ in the city of Atlanta through minor house repairs and intentional community work. Inspired by the ministry of Impact Florida, Impact Georgia helps teams of students encourage one another and the community they are serving by "giving up" a week out of their summer to clean up streets, rebuild porches, and exclaiming their love for God with those who may have never experienced His love for them. This week is filled with fellowship, discipleship and hard labor... with some guitar music thrown in of course!

Why Impact Georgia?
            I couldn't NOT do Impact Georgia. This nonprofit was started by one of my very dear friends, the great Kevin Jones. I met him my freshman year at Liberty University, and he has always been a positive influence in my life. He was greatly affected through his work at Impact Florida and felt called to do the same kind of work in Georgia. He and his crew have the training needed and will ensure that safety is paramount with your kids. ...I tried to get a hold of him for an interview, but we just couldn't connect this weekend. Maybe in an update (hint hint, Kevin, text me back!)?

            Also, I chose to profile Impact because I did a similar missions trip camp for three summers after finishing the 6th grade. I still remember some of the people I met and the experiences I gained during those short weeks. I learned I have no knack for carpentry, but plenty encouragement for those around me.

If you are a parent of a teenager or a youth pastor I highly recommend checking out this type of camp, as I know God will move greatly as they are challenged.

Day 2: SAT-7

Forgive me, as I really still do not know how I am going to go about each non-profit. And I had a greater challenge today when I came home and found that the internet had gone out. I'm currently sitting in a McDonald's (very awkwardly, I might add), because Panera Bread closed. But I wasn't going to miss this!

What is SAT-7?
                  SAT-7 is a Christian Satellite Television Station run by and for the people in the regions previously mentioned. I love this because as a Western woman it is nearly impossible for me to understand the cultural differences. I would not be able to broadcast a show and have it as well received as the shows produced by our staff in the studio locations.


Why SAT-7: 
                I chose SAT-7 as the first non-profit because I work for SAT-7 USA, and honestly, working for them was what inspired this project. Since I work behind-the-scenes, I can see how much it influences the people in the Middle East and North Africa, and that the work SAT-7 produces is such a positive encouragement in the lives of our viewers.

How you can help:
                   1. Give. Duh, this is what every non-profit wants. But if you choose to donate to SAT-7, you can pick where your money goes. If you come from a broadcasting background, maybe you want to have your money be spent to purchase new equipment. Or if your passion is to see young men of faith  trained in Biblical truth, you can specify your dollars to go towards the new TEACH project.
                   2. Pray and Promote. You would not believe how much time the staff of SAT-7 spends in prayer. The actors on each SAT-7 program pray on air, producers pray before shows and in the USA office we pray a lot for our ministry and one another, as well as the donors who write in a prayer request. It's a GREAT work environment. You can also sign up to be a volunteer and to talk about SAT-7 to some of your friends and home church.
                   3. Go. Sometimes SAT-7 USA (Canada and England as well, I believe) will send groups out to certain countries to tour our studios and to meet the staff who are working so hard to make sure each program is as top-quality as it can be. I've seen pictures, and it really does look like a great experience, one that could change you forever!

Non-Profit

Project!!!

It's a year of writing about non-profit companies and the affect they have on society. I also hope to create a piece of art that interprets how I feel about the non-profit of the day, whether it's through video, drawing, sculpting, graphic design, etc. I want this to challenge me creatively and emotionally. I will start September 4th.

The Plan:

• Sundays: Announce the non-profits to be showcased for the week.

• Mondays --- Fridays: Showcase one non-profit each day. 
• Thursdays: Update on a non-profit previously posted. 
• Fridays: Write about a non-profit that YOU suggested! 

• Saturdays: Take a break/research.
